Shifted
UX/UI case study · Android
AI-powered used car marketplace
An online platform for buying and selling cars where every car and seller is automatically checked for honesty
01 · Goal and role
Is there a user segment that needs this kind of service
Business goal
Assess the market potential of a service for buying and selling used cars and determine whether there is a user segment whose need for such a service is strong enough to launch an MVP
My role
- Designed and ran qualitative research: 20 in-depth interviews with used car buyers to uncover their buying scenarios and key barriers
- Analyzed 3 competitors (Drom, Auto.ru, Avito) to understand their value proposition, user scenarios and unmet audience needs
- Built a CJM from the insights, identified problems and their solutions, formulated product hypotheses and proposed an MVP focused on simplifying seller and car verification
- Designed the interface of the mobile app with the AI assistant
02 · Problems
Buying a used car is one big problem, and searching is the hardest part
-
16 of 20
respondents fear buying a low-quality car through online listings
-
6 of 20
wasted a lot of time driving to see a car in much worse condition than expected
-
1.5 hours
is the average drive to a car from a listing, only to be disappointed. And the same way back
-
01
No trust in listings
People are afraid of being cheated: the seller hides the car’s flaws, sells it, and then it is unclear what to do
-
02
Lots of resellers
They inflate the price for resale without improving the car’s condition and may hide its real history
-
03
Search takes a lot of time
You have to drive to see every listing you like. Sometimes far away. And the car may turn out to be bad
-
04
Paid reports
They cost around €2 each and still cannot guarantee the quality of the car
03 · Research
The user journey and two audience groups

12 · Hypotheses and MVP
Five hypotheses and the MVP scope
The hypotheses are based on the research insights and tied to product features
-
01
If the card shows the AI check status and a risk tag, buyers filter out doubtful listings before a trip and fear being cheated less
No trust in listings
-
02
If risks are visible before an inspection, the number of useless trips to bad cars goes down
Search takes a lot of time
-
03
If the check is built into the platform, buyers do not need outside reports for €2 that do not guarantee quality
Paid reports
-
04
If there is text query search next to the filters, novices find suitable cars faster, while experienced drivers keep their familiar path
Two audience groups
-
05
If the AI assistant analyzes photos of a car and gives a step-by-step guide, buyers can inspect a car without a professional car picker
Hidden defects
In the MVP
- Search by filters and by text query with refining of results
- A card with the AI check status and a risk tag
- A listing with specifications and features
- The AI assistant in chat: explaining risks and checking by photos
Not included, planned for later
- Payment and the deal inside the platform
- Inspection with a live expert
- Extended tools for sellers
13 · Conclusion
A segment with a real need exists
The research showed that used car buyers have a strong need to verify listings: 16 of 20 respondents fear buying a low-quality car, and the existing competitor paths do not solve the problem. The project combines prompt-based car search with AI analysis of listings. The solution is meant to simplify search and make buying more transparent
